Hollownton Homicide

This was a super fast read, clean – no sex, though there is some violence. Exciting right up til the end – can be read as a standalone but did leave me wanting more of these characters, as they’re so well-developed.

Pelican Freak’s 4-Star review:

Cover:

Good, fitting, original and relevant.

Editing/Proofing:

Seems professionally done.

Formatting:

Very easy on the eyes, no distractions.

Character Development:

Absolutely perfect, continuity-wise this is well done, with advanced personalities / development. Really felt I got to know everyone in this book and definitely feel like I need to keep up on these people.

Plot/Overall

This book is easily 4 stars for keeping me on the edge of my seat and being overall, very well written. The professional demeanor makes it an easy read. Although it’s over  80K words, it reads FAST. Very fast-paced, lots of dialogue.

It combines some cop-thriller/ mystery with some paranormal and/or urban fantasy. MC is a human who has no prior knowledge of the existence of anything supernatural and is resistant to believe and accept, but not so much that it hinders his ability to solve the case and do what needs to be done. He’s a strong, well-developed character who could easily star in his own best-selling series. Absolutely loved this book and had a hard time putting it down, kept me excited.

I don’t give out 5-star reviews freely, especially for romance because it’s so hard to find anything original in my experience.

That said, Anne Conley managed to get another one out of me, and for a #RomanticSuspense at that.

I highly recommend her Pierce Securities series. I’m behind on it, having just now read #4 and I couldn’t put it down.

PelicanFreak’s 5-star review:

Short version:
I couldn’t put this book down, from start to finish. I tried to – really- but then I missed it, bad. I had to pick it right back up. It gripped me and wouldn’t let go. I’ve a terrible attention span and not much holds my attention at all these days, let alone sucks me in like that. Clearly Conley was put here to write.
Detailed version:
Cover:
Unoriginal in concept but gorgeous and professionally-graphiced.
Editing/Proofing:
Clearly professional. Very few errors noticed.
Formatting:
Again, professional and the book is gorgeous on the inside too. Clean, easy read.
Character development/design:
All of the characters in this series are so perfectly designed, that you’d think she’s basing them on real people. The continuity from one book to the next in personality and everything else flows flawlessly. It’s really easy to get really attached really quickly to the protagonists. As the series goes on, and I feel all attached to characters I got to know in earlier books, the later books have that much more because I get glimpses at my ‘old friends’ while making new ones. This makes me hate the antagonists that much more passionately and gets me that much more invested in the whole thing. It’s all completely brilliant.
POV:
Flawless. Third person, rotating voices. Never any question of what is who, or feeling unfinished when one wraps and another takes over.
Overall:
I find everything predictable; usually within a chapter or two, I already know how the whole book’s going to play out, maybe even future books. With Conley… well, she doesn’t do it like everyone else. She manages to NOT write the same old store everyone else has already written. She mixes it up. She also has me so engaged that I’m too busy greedily absorbing the words and turning the pages to worry about predictions.
I can feel her characters’ feelings, I can feel their love for each other.
I’m always left wanting more- but not in a cliffhanger way at all. Just more of the whole Pierce Securities world because it’s such a great place to be. Reading Conley truly provides entertainment and a brief escape from reality and is probably detrimental to my mental well being somehow. I cannot recommend this series enough.
FIVE STARS because that’s all the

Pelican Freak’s Review:

Short version –
A great read, impossible to put down. Read within 24 hours. Just needs to be proofread as the mistakes/typos/etc. are a bit more abundant than I’d prefer.

Long version –

Character Development:
Brilliant and consistent with its predecessor, as most characters we were introduced to previously. I feel very attached to the protagonist and desperately curious about how the antagonists turn out – eagerly waiting for more of this group.

Editing/Proofing:
Fewer mistakes here than in Book 1 but – still too many. Needs a pass by a proofreader. Though the continuity is much better, flows much better so there’s definitely improvement.

Cover:
Gorgeous, fitting. Matches the theme and the series. Love it.

Formating:
Perfect. Easy on the eyes.

Plot / Reading experience:
Very fast-paced. Seriously could NOT put it down. I read the physical book because I was fortunate enough to come into a signed copy .. I normally avoid physical books because of the pain level (severe RA). I would put this book down because of the pain in my hands from holding it… and promptly pick it back up. I missed the book… more than I cared about the pain that holding it would cause!

A wild ride. Good continuity – MUCH better than its predecessor. Mysterious at times. Always fun. Dramatic. A 5-star read. The only reason I haven’t rated it 5 stars is because of the need for a proofread; professionally it isn’t a 5-star package. But truly, truly a 5-star read.
I hope the author will consider a proofread and a reprint so that this book becomes the overall-5-star-book that the story contained in it is.

I also am officially a huge fan of Clark-Kemp and will devour all the words she has written. I am extremely picky and demanding. It’s not often an author (or anyone/anything) keeps me this entertained, and it’s even less often that I overlook mistakes in a published work long enough to keep reading. I hope the author never stops writing and I whole-heartedly recommend her.

Bottom line : This is a 5star read in a 3/4 star package.

Written by the brilliant Tyffani Clark Kemp.

Because this is my blog and not amazon or Goodreads, I don’t have to worry about a star rating as much…  Instead you can find my breakdown of the different things that impact my reading experience and overall takeaway here:

This review is a bit tricky to write.
Short version: storyline is a 5-star read, but it’s presented in an unprofessional manner due to subpar editing.

Long version:

Character development:
… is brilliant. Truly brilliant, and I felt there was good continuity in regards to who the characters are as people and how they relate to everything/ everyone. Really great characters that you’ll love to hate or find yourself rooting for and feeling for.

Romance aspect:
I could absolutely feel some of the feelings as I read- that doesn’t often happen for me. Also the sex scenes were to the point, so they managed to be hot without being cheesy or dragged out. Very well done.

The plot:
It’s truly a really fun read. Problem for me was, there were some continuity issues. Several small ones and a few bigger ones so it did become distracting. Sure, nothing’s perfect but there were enough that it distracted from the reading experience at times. Normally, with holes/discrepancies like that, I’d dislike the book and rate it low – I think it’s important to note that this story made it all “worth it”, meaning despite the imperfections, I couldn’t put the book down.

I mean, I literally haven’t slept in 2 days because I NEEDED to keep going. Now that it’s over, I even miss it so I’ll be likely jumping into Book 2 and just hoping it’s professionally edited because… I think I’m hooked.

Normally with the number of mistakes I found in this book, I’d not continue in the series, if I even continued Book 1 at all. So again, I think the quality of the story and character development are impressive because I can’t seem to resist this series.

Editing/Proofing:
This book seems like it either was self-edited, or not edited. There is an abundance of things like poor grammar, mis-used words, etc. I think if an editor or at least a proofreader were to take a pass through this, it could be made into the overall-5-star presentation that this story / plot /these characters deserve. I think it’s a shame that the lack of editing is able to impact such a great read to such an extent as to distract from the reading experience.

Cover:
The cover seems professionally done. It looks great and is relevant without being redundant – A+.

Again, in summary. Brilliant writing and design overall. Proper editing would bring this read to the 5stars it deserves.

I do recommend it – as long as you are someone who can get past or won’t notice the mistakes, and won’t dwell on the continuity issues.

I’m sure I’ve mentioned her before and I’m sure I’ll mention her here again …

her books are just that good.

Cosgrove is the genius behind Detective Stan Brookshire who has his own series. Each book can be read as a standalone, or you can go in order – it doesn’t matter. Each one briefly touches on his backstory so you know what’s up and each book handles one case which wraps up nicely – no cliff hangers. If I’m left wanting more, it’s just because I love the characters and I do miss them in between!

I’ve read each of her books several times and they never get old. They seem to range about 50K to 80K words and just flow really quickly, regardless. Great pace.

Rather than boring you with a ton of buy links, I’ll just drop the link to my personal favorite Stan book here. I think this one is Cosgrove’s most twisted yet… the killer literally sends his victims’ body parts to their loved ones…

It’s just $3 – can’t go wrong for that.

I’ve previously reviewed it, see below for that.

She’s also recently started writing Romantic Suspense and while I’m not normally a fan of romance, I love this series as well and am eagerly awaiting book #3! These can also be read as standalones.

The series kicks off with Diamonds which can be found here:
