I finally read Murmur (Book 5 in Anne Conley’s Pierce Securities series) and it’s my favorite in the series so far.

I absolutely loved how it led into Bonnie & Zack’s story, as they’re featured in the series’ latest release, Seek.

Cover:

I like this cover a lot, it especially makes for a gorgeous print book.

Editing/Proofing:

Definitely professional, though could’ve used one more pass for minor typos.

Formatting:

Very easy on the eyes, fairly consistent.

Overall:

This book literally gripped me in the first paragraph: it was exciting and terrifying all at the same time and I needed more. I’ve been devastatingly sick and this book provided a much-needed escape. The characters are perfect, as is the continuity.

Valerie is full of issues but still manages to not be too victim-y. She just needed some time, and new people in her world. Quinten is… perfection.

There’s romance and it’s done so well, I can feel the characters’ feelings. There’s heat and passion that live up to the gloriously-built anticipation for them. There’s action and good old fighting and mystery with a twist you might not see coming.

If you’re not reading this series, it’s your loss. I’d give this somewhere between 4 and 5 stars, overall.

SEEK IS HERE!!!  I cannot tell you how long I’ve been working on Zack’s story.  For the most part, he’s become my problem child, and I wanted to do his story justice in so many ways.  And people have been expecting a lot from him, so I didn’t want to disappoint.  Who’s ready to find out about Zack and Bonnie?  Second chance romance?  Yes please!!!

Zack’s always been the funny guy, but with the deterioration of his sight and the loss of his father, the laughter has begun to dry up. Having recently discovered he has a brother due to his father’s infidelity, he’s questioning everything he thought he knew. To top it all off, the epic brush-off from Bonnie Pierce a few months back has Zack feeling less than a man.

Bonnie thought she’d feel better about herself after giving Zack a taste of his own medicine, but all it did was stoke an old flame, bringing up feelings she probably shouldn’t explore. When she ends up embroiled in his current case, they both realize their pasts are about to set their worlds afire.

The guest house behind Simon’s home has become her gilded cage, and Bonnie resents her brothers’ overprotectiveness even though they mean well. When Zack stumbles upon her horrific secret, she has no choice but to turn to the man she’s always loved.

In the end, Zack struggles to be enough of a man to protect the woman he has finally gotten a second chance with, even though he can’t see her.

Excerpt:

“Come on, it’s the best way to do this.” Zack was wheedling, his voice loud and a bit high-pitched in the din of noise.
“NO. I am not pretending to make out with you.”
Turning, she saw Zack and his friend standing outside a club, not ten feet away from her. The Wave. It looked like a nice place with a group of people in front of it. Zack and the other blond stood off to the side, ready to kick each other’s asses.
She approached them, knowing exactly what was about to come out of her mouth, as well as all the consequences, but not caring either way. She and Zack suddenly had unfinished business.
“I’ll do it.”
Zack’s shoulders slumped as his mouth turned down. She couldn’t tell if he was relieved or not. “Bon-Bon, this isn’t the place for you. You need to go home. Seriously. Some shit’s about to go down.”
Taking a step forward, she said, “So fill me in. I want to help.” He was still sporting the erection, and something about that made her giggle.
“Not a laughing matter, Bon-Bon. This isn’t time for games.”
Suddenly angry, she started shouting at him. “I kno that, Zackary Gale Ward!” He cringed at the use of his middle name, but she needed him to know she was serious. “I want to help. I’m here, I’m

willing to make out with you, and I’m not going home. I haven’t been out of my tower in months and I need to do this. You understand?”

“Do you even know what we’re doing?” the friend asked.
“Making out?”
She nearly laughed at his reaction—face purple and fists clenched—before he turned to Zack. “Dude, y’all are perfect for each other.”
She swallowed. Zack had told him about her. A million questions started swirling around in her brain. What did he say? Is he mad? Does he realize how wrong he was? Is he sorry? Does it matter?
“What are we doing?” Bonnie asked.
Zack nodded to his friend. “Go out on the corner and whistle if you see anything.” He turned to Bonnie, his voice a low growl. “A little recon before we go in. I need your eyes.”
She got it. He knew he was being followed. And whoever the guy was, he had something to do with the job, whatever that was.
“I kicked his ass for you,” she said proudly, as Zack was advancing on her like a predator stalking prey. She tried to blow it off, but the way his eyebrows raised at her words gave her a thrill.
“Who?”
“The guy following you. I laid him out in an alley behind the burrito place.”
Then he was upon her, his body pressed against hers until she was flat against the wall. “Tell me you didn’t engage him.”
“No. He engaged me.”
“Christ, Bon-Bon. Quinten will kill me if he realizes you’re in this.” His mouth was hot on her ear, and she squirmed, despite the seriousness of the conversation.
“Me, too.”

Zack gripped her hips and pressed into her with a groan. “What a way to go. Eyes peeled, princess.”

About Anne:

Anne has written her entire life and has the boxes of angst-filled journals and poetry to prove it. She’s been writing for public consumption for the past several years. Currently, she has four romance series. In Stories of Serendipity, she explores real people living real lives in small town Texas in a contemporary romance setting. In The Four Winds, she chronicles God’s four closest archangels, Uriel, Gabriel, Raphael, and Michael, falling in love and becoming human. In Pierce Securities, she gives us Ryan, Evan, Miriam, Zack, Quinten, and Simon. Her newest series, Book B!tches, is all about a group of women in Mystic, Texas who get into all sorts of shenanigans. She lives in rural East Texas with her husband and children in her own private oasis, where she prides herself in her complete lack of social skills, choosing instead to live with the people inside her head.

I don’t give out 5-star reviews freely, especially for romance because it’s so hard to find anything original in my experience.

That said, Anne Conley managed to get another one out of me, and for a #RomanticSuspense at that.

I highly recommend her Pierce Securities series. I’m behind on it, having just now read #4 and I couldn’t put it down.

PelicanFreak’s 5-star review:

Short version:
I couldn’t put this book down, from start to finish. I tried to – really- but then I missed it, bad. I had to pick it right back up. It gripped me and wouldn’t let go. I’ve a terrible attention span and not much holds my attention at all these days, let alone sucks me in like that. Clearly Conley was put here to write.
Detailed version:
Cover:
Unoriginal in concept but gorgeous and professionally-graphiced.
Editing/Proofing:
Clearly professional. Very few errors noticed.
Formatting:
Again, professional and the book is gorgeous on the inside too. Clean, easy read.
Character development/design:
All of the characters in this series are so perfectly designed, that you’d think she’s basing them on real people. The continuity from one book to the next in personality and everything else flows flawlessly. It’s really easy to get really attached really quickly to the protagonists. As the series goes on, and I feel all attached to characters I got to know in earlier books, the later books have that much more because I get glimpses at my ‘old friends’ while making new ones. This makes me hate the antagonists that much more passionately and gets me that much more invested in the whole thing. It’s all completely brilliant.
POV:
Flawless. Third person, rotating voices. Never any question of what is who, or feeling unfinished when one wraps and another takes over.
Overall:
I find everything predictable; usually within a chapter or two, I already know how the whole book’s going to play out, maybe even future books. With Conley… well, she doesn’t do it like everyone else. She manages to NOT write the same old store everyone else has already written. She mixes it up. She also has me so engaged that I’m too busy greedily absorbing the words and turning the pages to worry about predictions.
I can feel her characters’ feelings, I can feel their love for each other.
I’m always left wanting more- but not in a cliffhanger way at all. Just more of the whole Pierce Securities world because it’s such a great place to be. Reading Conley truly provides entertainment and a brief escape from reality and is probably detrimental to my mental well being somehow. I cannot recommend this series enough.
FIVE STARS because that’s all the

The latest installment in Anne Conley’s Pierce Securities is almost upon us! Since I’m super stoked, as this is one of the rare romance series I’d completely recommend, I wanted to share the cover!!

Excerpt (rated PG-13 for language):

“What are you doing in here, Ginger?” His rough growl in her ear sent a shiver of goose bumps racing up her spine.  Deena Rae bristled at the Ginger comment, but squirmed to get out from under him.  It was no use.  She was stuck.  His grip tightened on her wrists, as his legs wrapped around hers to still them.

And his other hand roamed.

His breathing was ragged as his hand explored more than was necessary to make sure she wasn’t packing heat, which she was, but didn’t think they were in the right position for him to find it.

“You know what they say about curiosity and shit.”  She shrugged, going for flippant, even as her heart raced.  Problem was, she wasn’t really scared anymore.  She should have been, but Deena Rae couldn’t muster the fear she needed to fight back.

His hand was definitely doing more than looking for weapons, if the growing length at her backside was any indication.  Each piece of her lock-pick kit was tossed into the immaculate carpet by her head.  Serial killers were clean, she reminded herself, trying to gather the terror she knew she should be feeling.  Why wasn’t she feeling it?

“How did you get in?”  His breath was hot in her ear, and if she wasn’t mistaken, his lips brushed it.  She was on fire.  Thank God he wasn’t looking at her face.

A soft chuckle escaped her.  “Would you believe you can learn anything on Youtube?”

A rumble of accompanying laughter came from his chest, pressed against her back, but he raised himself and with very little effort, had her flipped under him.

It wasn’t like she was fighting Mr. Fine Ass, but she was a tall woman.  At five foot ten, she’d always wanted a man to handle her, like, well, like a man.  Rick sure as hell wasn’t up to the task.

But now she was face to face with him, she couldn’t really breathe.  And her arms were still pinned at her head.

His face was fucking gorgeous.  A small scar under his right eye.  Deep brown eyes the color of teak wood.  Full lips.  Chiseled cheekbones.  Dude could be a model.

One of his crazy eyebrows was quirked up, wrinkling his forehead slightly.  “Are you trying to come on to me?  If so, this is a bit out of the ordinary.”  He was relaxing his body on top of hers, even if he still held her wrists in a death grip above her head and had a massive growing bulge still pressing against her thigh.

“I’ve never been accused of being ordinary,” she breathed at him, wondering where the hell all the air in the room went to.  Her heart was still pounding in her chest, and her breathing was hard and heavy.  She knew her breasts were practically in his face, but to his credit, he wasn’t looking.  But they were certainly pressing against his ever-so-hard chest.

His eyes flickered from her eyes to her lips, and his free hand twined through a tendril of her hair.  When they finally snapped back to her eyes, they were filled with resolve.

“This is bad timing, Ginger.  My life is a train-wreck right now, or I would give this a go.”  He smirked as he pressed his bulge into her thigh.  “But you really should just stick to your Tuesday Night Specials.”

Since he was relaxed, she whimpered a bit, pretending to pout while biting her bottom lip, watching his eyes snap back to her lips.  Using the distraction, she wound her legs around one of his, and rolled, effectively pinning him under her.

He let loose of her arms, and grabbed at her hips as she stood.

“Wow.  That’s cocky, Mr. Fine Ass.  But I hate the name Ginger, and train wrecks aren’t my style.”  She managed to get out of the door with a little dignity even though she was embarrassed to have gotten caught, and was ridiculously turned on.

But she’d managed to walk out of there with the upper hand, and that was what was important, right?

Excerpt

“How cold is it supposed to get?”

“Not too cold.  Fifties?”

“You should have told me to bring more clothes.”

“I packed some for you.”  He grinned at her outraged expression.

“You had clothes for me and let me parade around in that blanket all day?”

Flabbergasted, she watched heat creep into his face as he ducked his head, his grin turning sheepish.  “A guy can hope.”

“Hope for what?”  Heart pounding, she saw the evidence of his attraction as he avoided her gaze.  Was he actually as attracted to her as she was to him?  Why all the avoidance then?  It would certainly make their time together pass faster.  At least less awkwardly.  “Hope for what, Ryan?”

He looked up at her, the flush in his face making his complexion look ruddy.  Hot as hell.  She couldn’t stop herself.  Krista had never thrown herself at a man the way she was compelled to do with Ryan, but the way he looked at her—like he could devour her any second—made any semblance of decorum fly out the window… er… shelter.

Licking her lips, she watched as Ryan froze, every muscle in his body tensing up.  There wasn’t much space between them, but she closed it as she crawled into his lap, feeling a devilish grin on her face.  She could feel his arousal press against her core, and she automatically ground against it, eliciting a moan from him.

She’d never been this way with a man before.  His hands came up to grip her hips, as if to stop her, but his eyes told her to keep going.  He looked helpless to stop his desires and seemed on the verge of giving in to them.

“Hope for what, Ryan?” she repeated in a whisper before leaning forward.  She knew he wanted this almost as badly as she did.

“Don’t…” he breathed at her, leaning his forehead against hers.

Her pussy was so hot and wet; she couldn’t believe he was stopping.  He was hard and ready.  She rocked against him to illustrate.

“Don’t what?  You want this, don’t you?”  A shot of sobering indecisiveness rankled her.  “Or is this all one-sided?”  She backpedaled, crawling out of his lap and onto her pile of leaves.

“Fuck,” Ryan muttered under his breath.  “Of course I want it, Krista.  Like nothing I’ve ever wanted before.”  His voice was hoarse and gritty.  He adjusted the bulge in his pants, but didn’t come any closer, and Krista felt the sting of rejection all over again.  “You’re fucking beautiful.  And classy.  And perfect.”  He let out a whoosh of air she felt across the shelter.  “But I know that if we do anything, I’ll want to spend every day buried inside that sweet pussy and I won’t be able to protect you with a distraction like that.”  He stood, ducking in the low-ceilinged structure.  “I need to protect you.”  Without another word, he stalked out of the structure, into the rain.

Krista shivered in the sudden cold of the shelter.  The temperature hadn’t dropped physically, but the absence of Ryan left a definite chill against her heated skin.  What the fuck had just happened?  She had no doubt he wanted her.

Pelican Freak’s 4-Star Review:

Cover: Professionally done, relevant. Fits with the rest of the series.

Editing/Proofing: Cannot say since I have an ARC, however what I’ve read of Conley’s has all been well-edited.

Formatting:
Gorgeous as always – love that she uses ebook builders consistently because I know it’ll be easy on the eyes.

Plot/ Reading Experience:
Finally! As a follower of this series, Miriam has increasingly become and remained a mystery so I’m ecstatic that Click is finally here and I get to figure out what her deal is.

When the book opens, I am hooked- even more so than its predecessors and it’s exciting. This one stars out with a dramatic, action-y, potentially violent scene unlike the others and I love it! It goes on to bring the reader through all kinds of scandal, romantic drama, messed-up-drug-dealer-drama, personal drama – awesome! I love me some drama.

Conley does a great job with continuity and keeping the characters’ consistent with what we’ve seen so far. This is a really fun series to be hooked into – the dynamic of the security agency, its clients and employees alike is never dull and their cases remain suspenseful.

I like how this one addressed some real, relatable issues – I feel this was very well done.
Highly recommend the whole series.

*I received an ARC of this book for free in exchange for my honest review.
