I’ll get right to the point. Here’s my review:

This is the kind of book that swoops in and restores my faith in the arts. In a dull, dull world where everyone is just putting their own spin on things that already exist and trying to make a buck, Waters comes in and gives us a whole new world to get lost into.

Beneath the Fallen City has complex characters who will prompt all kinds of emotions; some you’ll love, others you’ll love to hate. Others, you might even go back and forth on as more details emerge or they show their true colors.

I had resorted to re-reading old favorites like Harry Potter and The Hunger Games when I really need an escape, another world to get lost in. With this series, I won’t be needing to revisit past reads for a while.  The reader gets a world that, while foreign, has plenty we can still relate to and dive right into. Nothing needs further explanation; it’s all made to make perfect sense and be comprehensible, without any long-winded or far-fetched explanations.

There’s action and fighting and various types of drama from romantic to vengeful to plain old greed and there’s adventure; all of it has a bit of a paranormal aspect, but nothing inconceivable. There’s some good versus bad or right versus wrong, but not in the same old, done-to-death way we always see. The reader is also treated to a love triangle of sorts, but not the usual, been-done-to-death type. I don’t want to give too much away, so I’ll just say it’s well done, really fun and I definitely have my steady favorite to root for.

Every time I stepped away from this book, all I wanted to do was get back to it. Not much holds my attention these days, let along sucks me in this extremely anymore. It’s so refreshing.

Also, if you want a good, strong female lead or role model, Kayla is a total badass. Read it, buy it for your daughters, nieces, etc. as that front is also covered. Carl is a good male role model, while we’re on the topic: a guy with good intentions and a pure heart. I feel like there is something for everyone to relate to in this complex, action-packed, adventure-filled read.

5 stars. I wouldn’t change a thing.

Truth or Dare, the first in a new series, Playing with Fire, by Anne Conley!
Cover Art: James Price with AEP Designs
Cover Model: Stanley Fields
Photographer: Jeffrey Todd Photography
Publish Date: August 21st, 2018

When a child’s game goes delightfully wrong, Jude finds himself rethinking his current status quo and begins looking to Annette to make sense of his own life.

Annette is trying not to get distracted by the sexy firefighter, but when her artistic retreat begins in disaster, Jude’s playing the hero she can’t ignore. Suddenly, her artwork is completely changed with Jude’s exquisite lines transforming her landscapes.

Up until now, their life was like a notebook full of doodles, but it’s turning into a full-fledged art showing, and neither of them know how to deal with the embers of desire when they ignite into flames.

Excerpt:

Jude let out a hiss of air, probably because the paint was cold, but it made his nipples stand out, a stark relief against the flat disks on his chest. She traced the ridges of his abdomen with strokes of color that stood out against his tanned skin.

The bristles of the brush loved Jude’s skin, flattening and molding to it, leaving color in their wake. It was glorious, the way her hand was working the brush.

His jeans hung low, and Annette held her breath as she outlined the line that went down the outside of the abdominal ridges, leading into the miraculous “V” that ended with the jutting
bulge in his jeans. Jude was holding his breath too.

Moving back up his body, she painted his collarbone, his neck, his Adam’s apple, then stood back and looked at him, trying to imprint the picture in her mind. Grabbing her sketchbook to ground herself, Annette quickly drew the lines, transposing them from Jude to paper so she could look at them later.

And remember.

His eyes were dark and intense, like a caged beast was inside him desperate to be let loose. Not finished with her work for the day, she tried to ignore that thought.

Vague impressions of Drake and his intentions for her show made her focus enough on her work to make sure she utilized the light while she could.

She made a quick sketch of Jude’s torso lines and looked at him again. He hadn’t moved and was still looking at her intently. A shudder of need slammed into her, but she still required something more.

Annette looked at him, trying to be dispassionate as she thought about what it was she needed.

She needed him to move a little bit so she could get the lines in motion.

“Can you hold onto that beam above you?” His golden eyes looked up to the beam in question, a good two feet above his head.

“Sure.”

Her breath hitched as he jumped straight up in the air and grasped the beam, his muscles popping with the exertion.

Those were lines a girl could dream about.

“Perfect,” she breathed as she reached for a chair to stand on and continue painting him.

The muscle around his armpit was bulging out roundly, so she started there. God, his arms were phenomenal. She loaded up her brush and went to work, tracing the routes of the veins on his forearms as his hands gripped the beam. His biceps were bigger here, more defined from this position, so she re-marked them in a darker shade of the flame color she’d mixed up.

His jeans sunk lower on his hips, so she was able to trace this “V” a little further down, gulping at the top of the nest of curls peeking from his jeans. The curve of his ass showed as she went around to the back of him.

“How long can you hang there?” She really wanted to get his back. It was amazing, the muscles a brilliant topography of the human body.

“As long as you need me to, sweetheart.” He wasn’t breathless at all, so she took his word for it.

After a quick sketch of the lines on his front, she went around to the back and started painting it.

Annette hadn’t done many portraits and hadn’t had much of an interest in sketching the human body. It was mostly because she went to college in east Texas, and the nude model they’d had for the one lesson had been a woman.

She may have to rethink the human anatomy.

When London was fifteen, a fortune teller told her she would meet her soul mate on June 23rd. The only problem is, which June 23rd? The woman wasn’t specific and only called him her dreamer. Desperate to find her mystery man eleven years later, London sets out to search for him but is waylaid by a mugger instead.

Elliot has had his eye on the woman who jogs past the park where he coaches his nephew’s baseball team for the past month. When he’s the first responder for a mugging victim on June 23rd, she’s barely conscious. She’s the woman tattooed on his chest. He’s seen her in his dreams and has been drawing her for years.

They’ll both sound crazy if they reveal their secrets, but they can’t stay away from each other. Elliot has priorities, promises made to his late sister. London’s trying to live a more intentional existence instead of waiting for everything to fall in her lap.

Can they fulfill the destiny predicted by the fortune teller? Or will fate be undone?

FortunesKiss_CoverExcerpt from Fortune’s Kiss:

He lowered his mouth to hers in a tender touch of their lips. She could feel the warmth of his lips on hers, and they explored in a leisurely kiss as if they had all the time in the world. Sounds of the carnival faded away as they rose higher into the sky.

Elliot surprised her by not getting handsy. He only touched her neck, wrapping his hand around it while his other hand went to her waist. He seemed content to just kiss her and not do anything else.

She returned his kisses, luxuriously running her tongue across his teeth, exploring the recesses of his mouth with a whimper. The kiss was perfect; it didn’t ask for anything or make demands. London relished the feeling of rightness in this moment with Elliot.

London suddenly understood a fundamental truth about couples in general. She kissed Elliot because the setting was perfect. It wasn’t a claiming thing or an interest in going further, it was a kiss. She kissed him because the intimacy of the gesture showed her desire to be close to him, and not in a sexual way.

She’d always thought holding hands and kissing in public were signs of possessiveness, but they weren’t. Instead of possessiveness, she realized it showed a desire to be close—to maintain contact in a way that was acceptable to others.

And this kiss was perfect.Close up picture of sensual lips

The leisurely contact, as she wrapped her arms around Elliot’s waist to pull him closer, was amazing. There was absolutely no other place in the world she wanted to be right now. She was in her thirties and had never kissed a man like this.

A throat clearing had them pulling apart reluctantly to find the Ferris wheel had stopped and the tattooed, toothless attendant was standing there with a giant grin on his face. “Magic in the air, tonight! Want another go?” Bushy eyebrows waggled at them.

London couldn’t have told him her name after that kiss, much less the story behind it. She was afraid if she went on another turn with Elliot, he’d have her kissed into brain mush.

Elliot got out, a small smile on his face, and turned to hold out his hand to London. Shetook it and, weak-kneed, managed to stumble out of the Ferris wheel carriage before another couple got on.

Leading Elliot down the midway, they were silent as she digested the way she felt right now. She wanted more with Elliot, and he was the first man to ever make her feel that way. He held her hand as they walked, and London’s traced her swollen lips with her fingers as she stared at the ground in front of her.

His hand was massive, wrapped around hers, and spoke of safety, protection, and belonging. Their hands swung absently between them as they weaved in and around people. The lights flashing, bells ringing, and people laughing all faded into the distance as London was just present with Elliot.

“That woman is waving you over, London.” Elliot’s soft voice spoke the first words since they’d gotten off the Ferris wheel.

London’s head snapped up, her eyes focusing on the woman he pointed to. It was her.

The fortune-teller.

The dimly lit tent at the end of the midway looked so familiar, even twenty years later. The woman looked the same—old and wizened, with a wild array of dark curls spilling around her face.

“I know her.” Not really, but she’d dreamed of this woman so many times, remembering her, wondering about her. They walked over to the fortune-teller, ignoring all else. “Hi,” London said stupidly. “How’ve you been?”

The woman’s dark eyes went from London to Elliot before her face broke into a smile. “I see you found your dreamer. Do you feel it?” London wasn’t sure what she felt, but she felt something, so she nodded.

Part of London wanted to go inside the tent and see if it had changed, but another part of her didn’t think this was real. She looked up at Elliot, who was watching the woman with a bemused expression on his face. Okay, so he saw her, maybe she was real.

The woman turned her attention to Elliot, who stiffened under her scrutiny. “Destiny is difficult … Very difficult …” Her attention back on London, she said, “You’ve found him, now keep him.”

She went back into her tent, and London tugged Elliot away.

“Friend of yours?” he asked, laughing nervously.Young couple

“Not exactly. More of an acquaintance.” London turned to look back at the tent, and as before, it was engulfed in darkness, as if there was no one there. “Take me home.” Elliot’s eyes darkened under the lights of the carnival, and he wrapped his hand around her waist, his fingers lingering just above her butt.

“With pleasure,” he spoke with a promise that took her breath away.

Pelican Freak’s 5-star review:

Cover:

Editing/proofing:

Seems professional, only a few errors noticed.

Formatting:

Absolutely gorgeous! If only every book were this pretty.

Character development:

So much fun! I like Vanessa and her house- yes her house- is its own character, I think- immediately. All of the book b!tches are great, I related to them all.  The town itself is another character and I quickly fell in love with the small-town vibe. There are characters to loathe, characters to root for, and characters whose books I think I’ve already predicted – overall brilliant design all around, with impressive attention to detail.
Overall:

Wow. This book sucked me in fast and I immediately realized that putting it down resulted in serious separation anxiety. I missed it every second that I wasn’t in it. It was like a drug – I was trying to read it while walking around my neighborhood on errands, and while simultaneously talking to customers at work, for example. Hazardous!

This book has lots going on: there’s romance with heat. There’s new friendships with some really fun women -though I may be partial to the Book Bitches. There’s a bit of paranormal activity with some friendly ghosts that completely add to the charm of the town and every building in it. There’s history, and it’s completely real-feeling and fun and addictive – Conley should publish more Historicals, I’d read those all day. There’s also some modern-day mystery, which I’ll let you see for yourself… Definitely highly recommend this book.

I tend to predict everything, and I usually will not rate a book 5 stars unless it can manage to surprise me somewhere. However, this is a 5-star read, surprises or not. That said, there were a few little surprises /a few things that didn’t go exactly to my predictions.

I’ll be very impatiently waiting on the rest of this series and I strongly recommend giving this book a read. If you’ve never read Conley- do it. Start with this or Saving Charlie or Craze (which is free at the time of this posting).

Hollownton Homicide

This was a super fast read, clean – no sex, though there is some violence. Exciting right up til the end – can be read as a standalone but did leave me wanting more of these characters, as they’re so well-developed.

Pelican Freak’s 4-Star review:

Cover:

Good, fitting, original and relevant.

Editing/Proofing:

Seems professionally done.

Formatting:

Very easy on the eyes, no distractions.

Character Development:

Absolutely perfect, continuity-wise this is well done, with advanced personalities / development. Really felt I got to know everyone in this book and definitely feel like I need to keep up on these people.

Plot/Overall

This book is easily 4 stars for keeping me on the edge of my seat and being overall, very well written. The professional demeanor makes it an easy read. Although it’s over  80K words, it reads FAST. Very fast-paced, lots of dialogue.

It combines some cop-thriller/ mystery with some paranormal and/or urban fantasy. MC is a human who has no prior knowledge of the existence of anything supernatural and is resistant to believe and accept, but not so much that it hinders his ability to solve the case and do what needs to be done. He’s a strong, well-developed character who could easily star in his own best-selling series. Absolutely loved this book and had a hard time putting it down, kept me excited.
